Brise Lumiere is an experience of movement, light and discovery. Defined by it’s interior tilted walls, the architecture compels patrons into a tactile relationship with space - brushing against surfaces as they pass or settle. As building cores, a network of monumental, structural wooden funnels sculpts the journey of light, channeling it into readings rooms embraced by a lush vegetative entourage. These organic sanctuaries provide an interplay of enclosure and openness, where shifting daylight filters through the wood, creating moments of warmth and tranquility. From the exterior, the bold, structural presence of the funnels commands attention, marking the Tremont library as a landmark of knowledge and light. Within, the architecture engages in an act of revelation, concealment and unexpected sightlines. A fusion of monumentality and intimacy, Brise Lumiere reimagines the library as a sensorial landscape, where knowledge is not just stored but discovered through space, shadow and light.
Funnelling Light
Daylight studies explore how the light wells behave with the movement of the sun above the library throughout the day. How much light filters in determines placement of seating and shelving.
Facade System
The library’s curtain wall enclosure is shaded through a champagne toned perforated metal screen. The screen cladding is directly attached onto the CLT structural system.
Structural System
The library is equipped with a CLT / mass timber structure. Planar and linear elements are constructed into a grid system effectively integrated with columns, beams and lateral walls to evenly distribute lateral and vertical loads
